This is the most unbelievable place ever. I know - you think I'm going to talk about the ocean life, the corals, the amazingly clear blue warm waters, the perfect stand up paddling conditions, and the totally unique picturesque Rock Islands. But NOOOOOOOO. That's not it at all.

For a few days about a month ago we were teaching Fuanes' wife Lani to drive. We've donated a chunk of our boards, paddles and other gear to them to start their own business here: Stand Up Paddle Tours. When we leave, we plan to give them our car as well, so they can pick up their paddling guests. For that to be useful, Lanie needed to become a licensed driver, something she's never really needed to do.
Driving here is a bit tricky so teaching someone to do it can be quite a challenge. The folks here don't exactly drive like back home in the US. Not fast and crazy like in Thailand or the Philippines, but slow and crazy. Or should I say "unpredictable."
Then came Lani's big day. She had already passed the written portion of the test so next was the driving test. Get this - they passed her without making her drive!!!! Her appointment was at 9. We sat and waited because there wasn't an officer available to go out with her and conduct the test. And we waited. Finally a few officers appeared. A guy who seemed to be a senior officer spoke with her in Palauan, walked away, came back and handed her a piece of paper saying she passed. WHAT???

We were there when Fuanes was tested and he actually had to drive. I about fell off my bench when I realized what was happening with Lani. A pass without testing. All of my great driving instruction was not even be put to the test. Oh well. Welcome to Palau.
